According to Rich Merritt's autobiography, he starred in 8 porn movies during a 4 month period while an active duty captain in the U.S. Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton in southern California. He was later profiled in a cover story about gay U.S. Marines in the New York Times Magazine, and in an article in The Advocate. After leaving the military he went on to become a lawyer and author of two books. The first was his autobiography published in 2005 with the title "Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star." The second was a novel about gay Marines set in the early 1990s, titled "Code of Conduct."
