Emmy-winning Writer/Composer/Director Joe Gallant also worked as a porn actor/director and film producer in the 2000's, directing such fanfare as several of the videos in the Smothering Bitches film series as well as the Exteme Filth and Manattan Girls series. In the early/mid 1990's, he had a long term romantic relationship with late former porn star Trinity Loren.
Biography
Born in NYC and a diehard resident since the "Taxi Driver" days of 1975, Gallant received an Emmy award in 1996 (with six total nominations) during his two decades as a NYC network-tv and theater composer/ sound-designer.
A respected bassist/orchestra composer with international press and numerous commissions, Gallant founded his recording and touring 18-piece orchestra, Illuminati, in 1982 to serve as his NYC sonic diary and sketchpad, resulting in 100+ compositions to date. Gallant has written, arranged and produced 8 large-scale CD projects with the group so far.
Renowned luthier Alleva-Coppolo Guitars has worked closely with Gallant, incorporating his advanced chordal chamber/post-jazz aesthetic into the design and creation of their first 6-string contrabass guitar. This "Joe Gallant" Tribute model debuted at the NAMM 2011 expo.
His edgy-smart filmmaking style attracted the attention of legendary director Robert Altman, who chose a number of Gallant's scenes as on-camera story material in his acclaimed network series "Tanner on Tanner".
Gallant has been called "the Burroughs-esque godfather of the Alt-Porn Movement" by industry trades. His groundbreaking NYC Adult-film work as a writer/producer/director/composer (creating over thirty XXX feature films to date) has earned him four AVN Awards (2003, 2004, 2005, 2010) and over fifty AVN Award nominations so far, along with national and international press, European "Best Film" Awards, and screenings at Berlin, Milan, Barcelona and Paris film festivals.
Gallant's recent feature for Adam & Eve, "The Skin Trade", stars Sasha Grey and is an ambitious, retro vision of LA's underground sex scene in the 70s, shot on Super-8 and HD. Three of his erotic feature films are listed in the book, "The AVN Guide to the 500 Greatest Adult Films of All Time" (Thunder's Mouth Press).
His uniquely Joycean 'nonfiction novel' about the Adult industry, and its subsequent feature-film treatment, are currently being shopped.
