EARLY LIFE

Born in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, growing up was not easy for Michelle Maren. At the time of her birth, her parents were married, but not to each other. As product of an adulterous affair, her father labeled her "a mistake" and her mother called her "a burden." Michelle's stepfather left when she was newborn and her biological father was not a part of her life. Her mother was clinically paranoid, physically violent, and verbally abusive. At seventeen, Michelle dropped out of high school, left home, and moved to New York City. [1][2]

CAREER

In 1981, she was a beauty queen, winning the titles of Miss Chelsea and Miss Big Apple. The following year, she worked as a magician's assistant at Resorts International Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City alongside the great illusionist, Richiardi. [3][4]

Michelle was an opening act for singer Tiny Tim ("Tiptoe Through the Tulips") and delivered Strip-O-Grams to celebrities such as Andy Warhol and the designer Halston. As a cabaret singer, Michelle sang American standards in numerous Japanese nightclubs in New York City and included over twenty Japanese songs in her repertoire. She performed as a dancer in New York nightclubs such as The Red Parrot and The Cat Club. As a model, she posed for artwork on the covers of novels such as Beware the Bequest. [5][6]

Between "legitimate" performing gigs, she was a go-go dancer in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. [7][8]

Soon Michelle became a popular men's magazine model, gracing the covers of such publications as The Erotic Film Guide, Cherie, and High Society. She also appeared in National Lampoon. Michelle was known as "The Brunette Marilyn Monroe." [9][10]

Modeling led to offers to perform in adult films. Michelle had a small part as a dancer in Flash Pants, and it was her image that appeared on the film's poster and video box. She later had a starring role in Throat 12 Years After, the sequel to the notorious Deep Throat. Gerard Damiano, the writer and director of the original film, also wrote and directed the sequel. [11][12]

In 1984, she appeared on the nationally syndicated matchmaking television program, Love Songs. After receiving a multitude of letters from men all over the country who were eager to date her, Michelle responded to only one--a Manhattan engineer. Within a few months, he proposed marriage but she turned him down. She stated, "I will marry for one reason only: love. If that element is missing from a relationship, there is no relationship." [13][14]

Michelle left the adult film industry after only one year. She said of her experience, "I found that the porn industry was composed of nothing but wounded souls - all yearning for the love and attention that they never received as children. On every set, there was a pervasive cloud of sad darkness hovering over the entire production." [15][16] [17]

In 2010, she started filming a documentary with legendary filmmaker Michel Negroponte (Jupiter's Wife, Methadonia, I'm Dangerous With Love). The title of her new film is The Autobiography of Michelle Maren and she is doing some of the filming, along with Negroponte. [18]
